Attention dog owners in Cyprus: Beware of Foxtail Grass
Apr 30, 2024
Attention friends! We want to highlight a crucial issue affecting both our shelter dogs and your pets. In regions like Cyprus, a plant called foxtail grass (Hordeum leporinum) poses a serious threat. This wild-growing grass can cause painful reactions and even inflammation in dogs. The barbed seeds easily penetrate the skin, causing irritation and discomfort.
A foxtail is a spikelet or cluster of grass that disperses its seeds as a unit, acting as a plant dispersal mechanism. Foxtails can become a significant health hazard for pets and other domestic animals, as well as a nuisance for people. In dogs, cats, and other animals, foxtails can become lodged irreversibly. They can enter nostrils and ear canals, burrowing into soft tissues and organs, leading to infections and severe physical damage, sometimes resulting in death. For humans, foxtails can work through clothing, particularly fabric shoes and socks, causing discomfort while walking.
Precautions During Walks:
Be vigilant in areas with tall grass or open fields.
If your dog bites or scratches a specific spot, check for foxtail seeds.
What to Do:
Thoroughly check your dog’s fur and skin after walks.
Carefully remove any foxtail seeds with tweezers.
Treat the area with an antiseptic.
If there's severe inflammation or deeply embedded seeds, consult a vet.
Thank you for your care and attention! Together, we can ensure our dogs' safety and comfort during every walk. Your dedication to your pets' well-being is truly admirable!
